Gym’ll fix it !

I think New Years resolutions are great. They provide an opportunity to think about the things you would really like to do over the coming months. After all if you don’t plan anything you will never get there.

For many people, the desire to take time to get a bit fitter becomes a goal and this is a good time to renew or take up that gym membership offer. January is a peak time for gym membership and attendance.

To help you get the best out of your membership or use of home gym equipment I would like to offer some tips:

  • Set yourself a realistic objective to reach in a specific time and make it  measurable. This might be waist or dress size in three months for example.
  • Write these things down and put them somewhere where you can see them every day.(Maybe on the fridge door).
  • Spend some time thinking how great if will feel to achieve that.
  • Look at all the other things that you do and decide where this goal comes in importance.
  • Look in your diary and book your own training sessions in – write them in. This works best if you can find 2-3 times per week of about 30 minutes rather than one long session.
  • Try to find a time where it will be easier to find a routine that is unlikely to get interrupted by other things. For example, before or after the school run or journey to and from work, or lunchtimes.
  • Make sure your gym kit is always ready to go at the times planned. For example, put your trainers and kit bag by the front door the night before, or put them in the car ready.
  • Have a plan of what exercises you are going to do. You might find a programme in a magazine or request some help from a professional trainer.
  • Enjoy your training session and remember after each time – you are one step closer to reaching your goal.

I wish you every success in the New Year.
